The Venetian Arsenal, founded in 1104, was a crucial shipyard and armory complex of the Venetian Republic. This largest industrial enterprise of medieval and early modern Europe could produce an armed galley within 24 hours. Its expansion continued for centuries, reaching its peak power in the 16th century. Currently, some historical buildings of the Arsenal are used for the Art Biennale, showcasing contemporary works.
