The Basilica di Santa Maria della Salute in Venice is a Baroque votive church, built in the 17th century. Its construction began in 1631 and was completed in 1687, according to the design of Baldassare Longhena. The building was erected as a thank you for the end of the plague epidemic that afflicted the city. The octagonal structure of the basilica rests on over a million oak piles driven into the lagoon bed. The interior is adorned with works of art, including paintings by Titian and Tintoretto. It is a significant example of Baroque architecture in Venice.
