The Grand Canal is the main waterway of Venice, 3.8 kilometers long and 30 to 90 meters wide. Along its banks stand over 170 Renaissance and Gothic palaces, built by patricians between the 12th and 18th centuries. The canal is shaped like an inverted letter S and is up to 5 meters deep. Four bridges cross the canal, including the famous Rialto Bridge, completed in 1591. It is a key communication route and a historical element of the city.
