As an early Christian basilica beneath the current cathedral, it contains Roman foundations, 6th-century mosaics, and the tomb of architect Brunelleschi.

The Cripta di Santa Reparata is located beneath the Santa Maria del Fiore Cathedral and represents the remains of an early Christian basilica that stood on this site before the construction of the current cathedral. Here you can see the foundations of Roman-era buildings, 6th-century mosaics, and tombs, including the tomb of Brunelleschi, the architect of the dome. Archaeological discoveries from the 1960s and 1970s allowed these historical layers to be made accessible to visitors. The entrance to the crypt is inside the cathedral.
