Dzielnica Psirri
Athens, Greece

A former artisan district of tanners and blacksmiths extending north of Monastiraki Square around Iroon Square. In the 19th century, Psirri was a hotbed of koutavakides, rebellious Athenian ruffians, and in the 1990s it transformed into a center of independent culture. Narrow streets are filled with street art murals, small galleries, screen printing workshops, and taverns serving meze with rebetiko music. After dark, Sarri Street and Plateia Iroon alley fill with tables of cocktail bars and cafes serving traditional bougatsa sweets.
