It commemorates the victory of Emperor Claudius II Gothicus over the Goths, which distinguishes it from Egyptian obelisks such as Theodosius Dikilitaşı.

The Column of the Goths is an ancient Roman column located in Gülhane Park, near Topkapı Palace. It was erected in the late 3rd or early 4th century, probably to commemorate Emperor Claudius II Gothicus's victory over the Goths. It is a monolithic marble column of simple Corinthian form, measuring about 18.5 meters in height. It is one of the oldest Roman monuments in Istanbul.
