Igreja de Santa Clara
Porto, Portugal

The interior, entirely covered with intricate carvings in gilded talha dourada wood, forms a remarkable contrast to its simple facade.
Igreja de Santa Clara (Church of Santa Clara) is one of the most important Baroque monuments in Porto, completed in the 15th century, but extensively rebuilt in the 17th and 18th centuries. Its facade is relatively simple, but the interior captivates with its richness of decoration. The walls and altars are covered with intricate wood carvings, gilded with the talha dourada technique, creating an effect of extraordinary splendor. The church was originally part of a Clarissan convent. It is an outstanding example of Portuguese Baroque.
