Kamondo Merdivenleri
Istanbul, Türkiye
The elegant spiral, zigzag-shaped stairs were built in 1870 by the Kamondo family for their children going to school.
The Kamondo Merdivenleri are elegant, spiral stairs in the Karaköy district, built in 1870 by the wealthy Kamondo banking family. Their distinctive zigzag shape and Neo-Baroque style make them a popular photographic subject. The stairs were intended to make it easier for the Kamondo children to get to school from their home. They are a testament to 19th-century architecture and the history of Istanbul's Jewish community.
