The Catacombs of San Gennaro in Naples are a two-level complex of early Christian cemeteries, carved into volcanic tuff. They were created between the 2nd and 5th centuries, serving as a burial place for the first Christians. The upper level houses a 5th-century basilica dedicated to San Gennaro, the patron saint of Naples. The lower level contains the oldest frescoes depicting biblical scenes and tombs of bishops. Visitors can also see the episcopal crypt and 5th-century mosaics. The site offers insight into the history of early Christianity in the region.
