Mount Lycabettus

Athens, Greece

A white single-nave Orthodox chapel crowning the summit of Lycabettus Hill at an altitude of 277 meters above sea level. The temple was built in the 19th century on the foundations of an earlier Byzantine church of Prophet Elijah and an ancient altar of Zeus. Inside, there is a modest iconostasis with images of St. George and St. Demetrius, as well as votive offerings brought by Athenians. From the adjacent terrace with a bell tower, one can admire the entire Attica valley all the way to Piraeus and the island of Aegina. On Holy Saturday, a candlelit procession descends the winding paths of the hill.
