In 1918, the independence of the Republic of Latvia was proclaimed within its walls, making it a key site for the country's history.

The Latvijas Nacionālais teātris, founded in 1917, is one of the most important cultural centers in Riga. It is famous for its rich repertoire, including classics of Latvian and world drama. It was in this building that the independence of the Republic of Latvia was proclaimed on November 18, 1918. The theater's Art Nouveau facade is a striking element of the urban landscape.
