The tower is part of a 13th-century city gate, and its carillon chimes a melody every fifteen minutes.

Munttoren, or the Mint Tower, is a fragment of a former city gate from the 13th century. It is a remnant of Amsterdam's defensive walls, originally called Regulierspoort. The upper part of the tower, including the clock and carillon, was added in the 17th century. Currently, the carillon bells play every fifteen minutes, and the tower itself is a prominent landmark in the city. The building is a testament to historical urban architecture.
