Panathenaic Stadium (Kallimarmaro)
Athens, Greece

The only sports stadium in the world built entirely of white Pentelic marble, situated in the natural gorge of the Ilissos River. The facility was originally built in the 4th century BC for the Panathenaic Games under the supervision of Lycurgus, and in 144 AD, it was rebuilt by Herodes Atticus to accommodate 50,000 spectators. In 1896, the arena hosted the first modern Olympic Games, financed by Georgios Averoff. Visitors can walk on the black athletic track, pass through the underground gladiators' corridor, and visit the museum of Olympic torches.
