It was the only border control point at Friedrichstraße station for those leaving the GDR, where moving farewells took place.

The Palace of Tears is a former border control building at Friedrichstraße station in Berlin, used for processing travelers leaving the GDR. It was built in 1962 and operated until 1989 as a border crossing point. Its name comes from the emotional farewells that took place there, often involving families separated by the Berlin Wall. Currently, it houses a permanent exhibition, part of the House of History of the Federal Republic of Germany, documenting the history of Germany's division and daily life in the GDR.
