Torcello is the oldest settlement in the Venetian lagoon, inhabited since the 5th century. In the Middle Ages, the island had about 20,000 inhabitants, while today it is home to fewer than a dozen people. The main attraction is the Basilica di Santa Maria Assunta, whose construction began in 639. Inside the basilica is a Byzantine mosaic of the Last Judgment from the 11th century, covering the entire western wall. Next to the basilica stands the Church of Santa Fosca from the 11th century, built on a Greek cross plan. On the island, one can also see the so-called Attila's Throne, a stone chair that, according to legend, was used by the leader of the Huns.
