Calton Hill
Edinburgh, United Kingdom

The volcanic hill, 103 meters high, closes the Princes Street axis from the east. In 1826, the construction of the National Monument of Scotland began here, modeled on the Athenian Parthenon, interrupted due to lack of funds after the erection of twelve columns. On the hill also stands the 32-meter Nelson Monument tower from 1815 with a time ball. Next to it rises the City Observatory building designed in the Greek style by William Playfair. From the hill, there is a panorama of the city and the bay.
