Narrow streets lined with Baroque townhouses and the ruins of the imperial palatinate by the river give it the feel of a small town, not a great metropolis.

A Rhenish settlement with over a thousand years of history, incorporated into Dusseldorf in 1929. It has preserved the picturesque Klemensplatz market square, Baroque townhouses from the 17th and 18th centuries, and the deaconess hospital founded in 1836, where Florence Nightingale practiced.
