A Roman market square founded by Julius Caesar and Emperor Octavian Augustus at the end of the 1st century BC. The most valuable element of the complex is the Tower of the Winds, an octagonal marble structure erected by the astronomer Andronikos of Kyrros. The construction combined a sundial, a clepsydra water clock, and a weather vane with images of eight wind deities on the frieze. The market is entered through the Gate of Athena Archegetis with four Doric columns. In Ottoman times, the tower served dervishes as a tekke for ritual sema dances.
