Acropolis of Athens and Parthenon
Athens, Greece
A small residential enclave nestled on the steep northeastern slope of the Acropolis above the Plaka district. The settlement was built in the 1840s by carpenters and masons from the island of Anafi in the Cyclades. They were brought to Athens by King Otto I to build his palace. The district is characterized by island architecture: whitewashed houses, narrow meter-wide passages, and wooden shutters painted blue. The alleys are adorned with pots of geraniums and bougainvillea, and silence prevails.
