Castel Sant'Elmo is a six-pointed fortress located on the Vomero hill in Naples, carved into tuff in the 16th century. Its construction began in 1537 at the behest of Viceroy Pedro de Toledo and was completed in 1546 according to the design of architect Pedro Luis Escriva. From the castle walls, a 360-degree panorama of Naples, Vesuvius, and the Bay of Naples unfolds. The building served defensive and later prison functions. Currently, it houses a contemporary art museum and exhibition space. It is worth dedicating about 90 minutes to explore this historic site.
