St Paul's Catacombs
Valletta, Malta

An underground cemetery complex from Roman and Byzantine times covering over 2000 square meters in Rabat. The catacombs served as a burial place for Christians, Jews, and pagans from the 3rd to the 8th century AD. In the limestone-carved corridors, canopy tombs and round stone banquet tables called agape have been preserved. According to tradition, in a neighboring grotto, the apostle Paul found refuge after his ship was wrecked off the island's coast in 60 AD.
