The Royal Mile
Edinburgh, United Kingdom
The main artery of the Old Town is one Scottish mile long (1814 meters) and runs from the castle gates to Holyrood Palace. It consists of four consecutive streets: Castlehill, Lawnmarket, High Street, and Canongate. Along the route, dozens of narrow alleys called closes branch off, where multi-story tenement houses were built in the 17th century. Casts of the hands of Edinburgh Award laureates are embedded in the pavement in front of the City Chambers. Historic churches and taverns stand along the cobbled road.
