The World's End
Edinburgh, United Kingdom
The pub is located at the intersection of Royal Mile and St Mary's Street, at the site of the 16th-century city gate Netherbow Port. After the defeat at Flodden in 1513, residents surrounded the city with the stone defensive wall Flodden Wall. For Edinburghers of that time, going beyond the gate meant leaving the safe world, which gave rise to the name of the establishment. The cobblestone pavement in front of the entrance is adorned with brass plates marking the exact course of the former city fortifications. The interior has retained the austere atmosphere of an old inn.
