National Art Gallery
Sofia, Bulgaria
Instead of ancient artefacts, it shows Bulgarian paintings, including works from the 19th and 20th centuries, in the halls of former royal apartments.
The gallery is housed in a former royal palace on Alexander Battenberg Square and shows mainly Bulgarian art, from icons to 20th-century painting. It is a good choice if you want to see what the local art scene looks like, not just well-known names. Tickets are bought on site, the visit is calm, and there is usually no crowd. Check the opening hours before you go, as it may be closed on Mondays.
