St. Mark's Square is the main public square of Venice, measuring 175 meters in length. It is surrounded by the historic buildings of the Procuratie Vecchie and Nuove and the Napoleonic Wing. The square is the lowest point in the city, which results in regular flooding during the aqua alta phenomenon. Within its confines are St. Mark's Basilica, whose construction began in 828, and St. Mark's Campanile, completed in 1514. The square is the central point of Venice's social and tourist life, attracting millions of visitors annually.
