Dublin Castle
Dublin, Ireland
The seat of British administration in Ireland from the 13th century until the ceremonial transfer of power to Michael Collins in 1922. Of the original Norman fortress, the stone Record Tower, built in 1228 with walls almost five meters thick, has survived. The main part of the complex consists of the eighteenth-century State Apartments with St. Patrick's Hall, where inaugurations of Irish presidents take place. In the underground, the foundations of Viking defensive ramparts have been uncovered.
