Palace of Holyroodhouse
Edinburgh, United Kingdom

The official Scottish residence of British monarchs was created by expanding the guest quarters of Holyrood Abbey from 1128. In the 16th-century northwest tower, Mary, Queen of Scots' private chambers have been preserved. In the queen's study, her Italian secretary David Rizzio was murdered in March 1566. The Great Gallery displays 96 portraits of Scottish kings painted in the 17th century by Jacob de Wet. The adjacent royal gardens cover an area of four hectares.
