Philopappos Hill
Athens, Greece

A green hill rising southwest of the Acropolis to a height of 147 meters above sea level, known in antiquity as the Hill of the Muses. At the summit stands the marble tomb of Gaius Julius Antiochus Philopappos, a Roman consul and benefactor of Athens from the 2nd century AD. The slopes are crisscrossed by paved stone paths designed in the 1950s by architect Dimitrios Pikionis. Underground chambers were also carved into the rocks, which, according to local tradition, served as a prison for the philosopher Socrates before his trial in 399 BC.
