A Roman musical theater erected in 161 AD on the southwestern slope of the Acropolis by the wealthy Athenian patrician Herodes Atticus to commemorate his deceased wife Regilla. The auditorium originally seated 5,000 spectators on 39 rows of marble seats, and the entire structure was covered by a wooden cedar roof. Destroyed by the Heruli in 267, the theater was reconstructed in the 1950s. Every summer, the theater becomes the main stage of the Athens Epidaurus Festival, hosting philharmonic orchestras and operas.
