St. Mark's Basilica in Venice, built in the 11th century, is an example of Byzantine-Romanesque architecture. It is the resting place for the relics of St. Mark the Evangelist. The interior of the temple is adorned with over 8000 square meters of gold leaf and mosaics, depicting biblical scenes. The main element of the altar is the Pala d'Oro, a golden altarpiece with 1927 precious stones, crafted in Constantinople. The building served as the Doge's chapel and has been the cathedral of Venice since 1807. Approximately 3 million people visit it annually.
