Fort St Angelo
Valletta, Malta

A medieval fortress rising on the headland of Birgu in the heart of Grand Harbour. The fort was the headquarters of the Order of St. John under the command of Grand Master Jean de Valette during the Great Siege in 1565. The mighty defensive walls withstood months of bombardment by the Ottoman army. The upper floor of the fort remains sovereign territory of the Order of Malta to this day. From the highest bastions, there is a view of all of Valletta, Fort Saint Elmo, and the waters of the harbor bay.
