St. Alexander Nevsky Cathedral
Sofia, Bulgaria

Beneath the naves lies a crypt with a collection of Bulgarian icons from the Middle Ages, and the interior is decorated with mosaics and marble from Italy, Brazil and Bavaria.
The largest Orthodox church in Sofia, with a large gilded dome and a bell tower, visible from afar in the centre. Entry is free, but modest dress is required and photography inside is prohibited; during services visiting is limited. It is best to come in the morning, as tour groups gather at the entrance during the day. In the crypt there is a separate icon exhibition, which is paid.
