Tawerna Diporto
Athens, Greece
An unmarked underground eatery operating since 1875 at the corner of Sokratous and Theatrou streets, opposite the Athens Central Market Hall. The entrance leads through two iron doors in the pavement down steep stairs to a cellar filled with large barrels of retsina wine. Owner Mitsos serves only a few traditional dishes cooked in cauldrons each day. The menu includes revithia chickpea soup, fasolada bean soup, fried small sardeles fish, and a village salad with feta cheese. Dishes are served on metal plates.
